In opening arguments in the trial between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp, the actor’s lawyers assured that the actress has lied in her complaints of domestic violence to benefit her career. However, when it was her turn to talk about her, the model’s defense also dropped a bombshell: Deep was accused of “sexually assaulting” Heard during an incident near the end of her marriage.

Depp sued his ex-wife over a 2018 op-ed he wrote for the “Washington Post” about surviving domestic violence, though he never mentioned Depp by name in the article.

Opening statements for the libel trial, expected to last about six weeks, began Tuesday inside the Fairfax County Courthouse in Virginia, with both celebrities in attendance.

During the process, which is broadcast live On “Court TV,” the actress’s attorney, Ben Rottenborn, said the evidence will show that she suffered domestic abuse from Depp which “took many forms,” including physical, emotional, verbal, and psychological.

Discussing the headline used for the online version of Heard’s op-ed, the attorney explained that she did not write that headline and was not able to approve it. She also stated that her representative was a victim of sexual violence by Depp.

Of the headline, “tragically, it’s true,” Rottenborn told the courtroom. “Amber suffered sexual violence at the hands of Depp… You will hear in the most graphic and horrific terms about the violence she suffered. You will hear it directly from her. She will take the stand and she will“, he indicated.

Rottenborn described the moment Depp allegedly abused and sexually assaulted Heard. It was during a trip to Australia in 2015, when Deep he had a three-day “blackout” caused by alcohol. Amber “She had the courage to confront him about his drinking. Imagine that: a concerned wife confronts her husband about her drinking and she is ‘rewarded’ with it.”

Regarding this new accusation, a spokesman for Depp He said in an interview for People magazine that the claims are “fictitious were never made at the start of the Amber allegations in 2016, and only advantageously emerged years lateronce she was sued for defamation after stating in her op-ed that she was a victim of ‘sexual violence’.”

“Words are key in a defamation case and, conveniently, this accusation only came after that. This follows a pattern of his elaborate and erroneous claims that have continued to change and evolve over time for the purpose of impacting Hollywood and that Amber has dominated and used to exploit a serious social movement,” he said.

Depp’s legal team was the first to give his opening statements, claiming that Heard fabricated the “false accusations” to jumpstart his career in full swing “#MeToo.” His attorney, Camille Vásquez, argued that Heard added sexual assault to a list of charges because he “went into a panic” when he realized the “seriousness of what he had reported” and was unable to retract.

Vasquez added that Heard’s attorneys would share “explosive” stories “designed” to “distract” “common sense.”

Depp and Heard, who met while filming the movie “The Rum Diary” (2011), broke up in May 2016, when she filed for a domestic violence restraining order against him, accusing him of abusing her. The actor, for her part, denied the accusations and resolved the terms of their divorce out of court in August of that same year and the process ended in January 2017.

Previously, Depp lost a lawsuit against the newspaper “The Sun”, after he sued the British tabloid for calling him a “wife beater”, a court upheld the outlet’s claims as “substantially true”. Depp’s attempt to appeal the decision was overturned in March 2021.
