Artist and model Ivy Getty has married her partner, photographer Tobias Engel, in a Maison Margiela dress adorned with broken mirror shards.

The 26-year-old, great-granddaughter of oil magnate J. Paul Getty, married Engel at San Francisco City Hall this weekend.

Numerous photos of the nuptials, shared on her Instagram, show the bride in a floor-length column dress and a see-through veil.

In an interview with Vogue, Getty said she knew she wanted to wear a John Galliano design for Maison Margiela on her wedding day as soon as she got engaged in September 2020.

His love for John Galliano’s work was born from his grandmother, Ann Getty, who always sported his designs. Ann died of a heart attack two weeks after the Getty engagement.

“After my grandmother passed away, she was actually more like a mother to me, I felt this connection with John. I knew I wanted him to create the dress for my wedding,” she said.

Getty’s veil was embroidered with walnuts in honor of her grandmother, who grew up on a walnut farm, and guitars in honor of her late father, John Gilbert Getty, who was a musician.

“My veil personifies the people and the moments that led me to this day,” Getty said.

“Not having two of the most important people in my life physically with me on my wedding day is extremely difficult, but through John’s vision and creativity, he was easily able to bring their presence to life.”

Galliano told Vogue that the dress was made up of four layers.

The bottom layer is a full corset, the material of which was matched with Getty’s skin tone. It was lightly padded around the hips to give the appearance of a smaller waist.

The second and third layers were made of tulle, to create “a kind of filtration,” said the designer. Broken mirror shards formed the final cape, which was not tight fitting, but was made to hang from Getty’s shoulders like a robe.

“Through the broken mirror, you see the shape of the body. A large percentage of the dress is a real mirror, but because she has to walk in it, we created a substance that would evoke the real mirror, but weigh considerably less.

“The fragments are attached to each other with wire, like jewelery. Finally, we passed strips of beige leather cut on the bias through the fragments to give the texture a fresher look. I didn’t want it to look too precious,” Galliano said.

Getty’s bridesmaid was the star of The Queen’s Gambit, Anya Taylor-Joy, who described her as “the most beautiful bride”.

Sharing a roll of photos of herself with Getty on Instagram, Taylor-Joy said their friendship was “nothing short of a miracle.”

“I am so PROUD of the woman you have become. If you ever have any doubts, I have loved you and will love you forever, ”said Taylor-Joy.
