Charlotte Casiraghi, 35, knows how to make a grand entrance. The daughter of Princess Caroline of Monaco and granddaughter of Grace Kelly kicked off the Chanel show at Paris Fashion Week on horseback. The images quickly went viral.
Dressed in a shiny black jacket, trousers and stylish riding boots, Casiraghi paraded down the catwalk on horseback to the surprise of those in attendance, including Pharrell Williams.
As Casiraghi demonstrated the versatility of Chanel clothing, a film projected in the background highlighted the importance of horses in “Coco” Chanel’s work, among whose first customers were women who loved horse riding.
Casiraghi, 35, is not the first to bring a horse to the catwalk. Last year, Virginie Viard, who took over as Chanel’s creative director after Lagerfeld’s death in 2019, presented the bride of the year, Lola Nicon, on a majestic white horse.
Carolina de Monaco’s daughter has spoken about her love for horses. “They have played an important role in my life. They gave me the energy to keep going, the ability to fight, giving me invaluable confidence and strength.”, he said in an interview with the magazine Harper’s Bazaar in 2013.
Prince Albert’s niece occupies the position 11 in the line of succession to the throne of Monaco.
In 2020, Casiraghi was introduced as the new Chanel brand ambassador. She made her official debut in December of that year when the fashion house posted the news on Instagram: “Sealing a long relationship based on trust and friendship, started by Karl Lagerfeld and continued today by Virginie Viard, Charlotte Casiraghi will become ambassador and spokesperson”.
In a black-and-white video, Princess Grace Kelly’s eldest granddaughter said she felt “as if I was almost born with Chanel”, adding that he remembers the photos taken by Karl Lagerfeld of his mother wearing the brand while pregnant.
Casiraghi also noted that for her July 2019 wedding to Dimitri Rasam wore one of the late designer’s latest Haute Couture designs and that his successor, Virginia Viard, with whom she shares a deep friendship, oversaw her accessories.
Accepting the role, Casiraghi explained that it will be “a collaborator, not just a muse” and that she believes it is part of her responsibility to emphasize Chanel’s message of female empowerment.
