Prince Albert of Monaco reappeared surrounded by his family during Monaco National Day after revealing that his wife, la Princess Charlene, “exhausted and overwhelmed”, was admitted for “several weeks” to a “treatment center” after falling ill within hours of her return from Monaco after 10 months in South Africa. The prince was photographed with his brothers, including Princess Caroline of Hanover, while the family enjoyed the extravagant celebrations organized in Monte Carlo on the occasion of the National Day of Monaco, which is celebrated annually on November 19.
In interviews published today, Alberto, 63, tried to explain what happens to his wife, but his elliptical statements feed all kinds of theories. According to him, his wife, who is increasingly fragile, acknowledged that she needed help after he organized a family intervention with his brothers and sister-in-law.
Albert, who earlier this year said his wife was suffering from a sinus infection, did not reveal details of her illness, but ruled out cancer and Covid. He hinted that it is a mental health problem, saying that she “was overwhelmed and could not cope with official obligations, life in general or even family life” and that she suffers from “exhaustion, both emotionally and physically”.

In statements to the magazine PeopleAlberto said last week’s family reunion in Monaco was initially ‘pretty good’ in the early hours, but then it became ‘pretty apparent’ that Charlene was ‘bad’. She said the former Olympian “realized she needed help,” adding: “I was overwhelmed and could not cope with official obligations, life in general or even family life.”
The Prince revealed that the final treatment decision process involved an intervention-style meeting with family members: “I sat her with her brothers and a sister-in-law. She had already made her decision and we just wanted her to confirm it in front of us. She wanted this. “
“She already knew that the best thing was to go to rest and receive a treatment really framed in medicine. And not in Monaco. For privacy reasons, it would have to be somewhere outside of Monaco, ”he added.
Meanwhile, she revealed that Gabriella and Jacques would “visit” Charlene once they had the “medical clearance,” saying the six-year-old twins “knew she was tired” and “wasn’t herself.”
French magazines like Voici affirm that Charlene has gone to Switzerland, where there are numerous specialized private medical clinics.
“I’m probably going to say this several times, but this has nothing to do with our relationship. I want to make it very clear. They are not problems within our relationship; not with the relationship between a husband and a wife. It is of another nature, Alberto affirmed ”.

And he said again that his current state was the result of “various factors that are private.”
“I had not slept well in several days and was not eating well. She has lost a lot of weight, which made her vulnerable to other possible ailments. A cold or the flu or, God help us, COVID, ”he said.
Claims that she will stay in Switzerland were backed up by a source who knows the couple well, who said: “The south of France is too close, but Switzerland has great private medical facilities, and Charlene will be well cared for there.”
Almost simultaneously with Alberto’s statements, the 43-year-old princess shared a post on Instagram from the “secret place” where she is recovering from a “fatigue that is not only physical.”
Charlene had returned to Monaco on Monday with her husband and twins Jacques and Gabriella, after a 10-month absence while recovering from surgery for sinusitis she contracted during a solo charity trip to her native South Africa earlier this year.
Before leaving in January, Charlene had caused a stir in Monaco by learning that she was living in a modest two-room apartment above an old chocolate factory rather than in the 12th-century palace itself.
Charlene’s estrangement came after it was reported last December that Alberto had fathered an illegitimate child (which would be the third, if proven) with a Brazilian woman.
