In recent years it has become fashionable among actors and celebrities of all kinds to become the image or launch of a spirit drink, and the one that is particularly often more prevalent is tequila – which, like champagne, must be made to have a designation of origin. in the Tequila region, Jalisco, if not, it’s just an Agave drink.
Among the celebrities who have invested in this type of adventure are Kendall Jenner, who was heavily criticized on social media when she unveiled her Tequila 818, basketball players Michael Jordan and LeBron James and Maroon 5 rocker Adam Levine.
But the one who has raised eyebrows when announcing his is the actor Sam Heughan, famous around the world for his leading role in ‘Outlander’, the successful series that mixes drama, romance and fantasy, which has led him to become one of the Most famous male figures of the moment already have a legion of female fans who are very loyal and follow him everywhere.
Now, if you’ve been on the moon for the last five years and you don’t know what ‘Outlander’ is or you don’t know the actor who plays Jamie Fraser, an 18th-century Scotsman who falls in love and gives himself body and soul to a traveler from the Future is a series based on the successful series of novels created by Diana Gabaldon (a famous Arizona-born novelist of Mexican descent, by the way) in 1991 and has sold millions of copies.
The plot goes something like this (without getting into complications or spoilers): the story revolves around Claire Beauchamp (in the series played by the brilliant Caitriona Balfe) a 1945 combat nurse married to MI6 agent Frank Randall, which is mysteriously taken through time to 1743. There she meets Jamie Fraser, a young Scottish warrior, chivalrous and romantic, and soon Claire begins to fall in love with him, finding herself caught between two very different men in two different lives.
Nobody imagined that the television version of Gabaldon’s novels would be so tremendously successful, to the point that six seasons have already been added and the number of viewers is not diminishing. Sam’s physical charm has caused such a sensation that there are IG accounts devoted exclusively to uploading photos of him, and there are a host of Facebook groups dedicated to him.

But the actor, who is 41 years old and since 2014 has played the favorite redhead of the ladies, has not rested on his laurels and created his own distillery, Sassenach Spirits, with which he first created the scotch whiskey Sassenach Select and now, has launched ‘El Tequileño’, their first foray into the highly-fashionable Agave liqueur that continues to be wildly popular around the world.
It was thus that in recent days, Heughan tweeted the following: “I am very excited to present our newest baby of Sassenach Spirit! The Tequileño … The perfect combination of our cultures and passion, an association steeped in tradition, heritage and love for good tequila! ”
But, of course and naturally, the fans also expressed something confused: How, then, did a Scotsman have produced a traditional Mexican drink? Where did the idea come from?
Likewise, in an interview, Heughan revealed that a visit prior to the COVID-19 epidemic that he made to Mexico discovered tequila in the town of Tequila itself and he liked it so much that he decided to create his own in partnership with the same distillery. Thus, in August 2021, he was already putting the final touches on his drink, which he launched just a few days ago.
Although at first the concept of mixing Scotland and Mexico may seem a little weird, Sam has noted the similarities between the two cultures and tweeted: “This bottle represents friendship, the craftsmanship that mixes two amazing cultures.”
He later explained to Forbes magazine: “Mexico is a very beloved place and in reality, Mexico and Scotland are very similar in terms of culture, with a particular love for celebration and family. And today at my distillery we are truly honored to be part of that family. ”
Heughan was also eager to share his newfound love for tequila with his home country, as he claims that the UK still doesn’t appreciate the liquor as much as it should: “We here really don’t understand tequila and I’m trying to educate my people. “he wrote on Twitter. “Because tequila is something incredible.”

But beware, here: all this experience, flavor and uniqueness does not come cheap, since a bottle of The Sassenach Select ‘El Tequileño’ is more or less at 99 dollars per bottle (about 2,000 pesos). But this tequila is 100% Agave, which is always more expensive than tequila that is not as pure. And so far it has received very positive comments from tasters and specialists.
“This is not just another ‘famous tequila,’” event management company Twist London Limited wrote on Twitter. “It really is one of the best tequila on the market. It will be difficult to achieve, it will be worth it. “
Naturally it is clear that it is not an export product but has been created exclusively for the Anglo-Saxon market places (in Mexico you can get equally good tequilas, much more accessible, so fans will be happy to try this product that, with a bit of luck, it will make them travel back in time, like the protagonists of ‘Outlander’.
