The Duchess of Cambridge’s change to Diana of Wales’ engagement ring

Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge they have 10 years of happy marriage. Since the grandson of Elizabeth II asked his now wife the transcendental question of if I wanted to be his wife, the Duchess has proudly worn on his finger the ancient engagement ring that belonged to Diana of Wales and that the Duke of Cambridge gave him when he asked for his hand. But before she could wear such a meaningful jewel, she had to do some touch-ups. When the son of the Prince of Wales gave up his, at that time, fiancee the dazzling piece of sapphire from their late mother’s collection, they realized that it was necessary to change the size of the ring.

Without fear of anything! The Dukes of Cambridge, between snakes and tarantulas

The Duchess wanted to change the ring as little as possible as it had belonged to her future husband’s mother and wanted to keep its essence, but had to adjust the jewel as Garrard’s original design was too large for her and danced on her finger. For this work the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge turned to the prestigious jeweler G. Collins and Sons, who to change the diameter of the ring, instead of breaking and re-soldering the band later, he opted to add small platinum beads inside to thus reduce its size. In making this modification, great care was taken to not damage the striking sapphire stone and diamond halo that surrounds it, two of the elements that have made this ring an iconic jewel.

In June 2019, a year and a half after we first saw the beautiful Duchess ring, it was seen that he had redesigned his precious jewel. The gold band wearing the piece, which was designed by Cleave and Company, Elizabeth II jewelers and medalists, was replaced by one inlaid with diamonds, completely changing its appearance. And that is perfectly complemented by the large African diamond and the two sides of the Diana of Wales collection. The three stone ring includes a large African diamond from Botswana, a country where the couple was on vacation at the beginning of their relationship, flanked by two smaller stones on the sides from Princess Diana’s personal collection.
