The most serious K-Pop scandals of 2021: from group separations to allegations of abuse

Throughout this year within the world of K-pop Many idols were involved in rumors and controversies that they finished, or nearly did, their artistic careers.

From complaints for sexual harassment, psychological abuse, up to investigations by drug possession, or problems in the industry that reached the dissolution of groups who were in their prime, it was the controversies that starred in 2021 within Korean pop.

One of the first news that surprised fans of the K-pop in January was the official announcement that the members of GOT7 they decided do not renew contract with the company they trained, debuted and stayed for 7 years: JYP. Although this did not mean their dissolution, it did have an impact on their agenda as a group.

In addition to this grouping, in May GFriend made the same announcement and said goodbye to Source Music with the promise of not “dissolve”, but the members started individual activities.

After grave xenophobic attacks that marked the United States in March, Bts exposed the occasions in which have suffered from racism in that country, which created his fans to expose all the occasions in which, around the world, their idols have suffered from this type of aggression.

This bullying caused the singer depression, which led to self-harm and attempt to kill yourself on various occasions.

At the end of July it was reported that Mine was hospitalized after finding her unconscious in a pool of blood, caused by a suicide attempt.

Currently, the young woman continues in her fight for justice; people close to her assured that she is stable and trying to rebuild her life.

Although it is not part of Korean pop, the actors and actresses do have a strong impact on the Hallyu, and some were embroiled in serious rumors.

One of the most popular controversies in early 2021 featured Seo Ye Ji, who triumphed with It’s Okay to Not to Be Okay. It was made public that she allegedly caused her boyfriend, actor Kim Jung Hyun, to behave in a certain way starting from handling that he would have exercised for years and that, even, forced him to terminate the contract he had with the company that represented him. This caused her to be removed from various dramas and series.

The actor Kim jisoo, known for his participation in River Where the Moon Rises, was accused of allegedly having bullied and harassed at school to his classmates, in addition to sexually harass to a young woman. After months of trying to clear his name, it was revealed that one of the alleged victims accepted that they were false. It was ruled out that he had sexually harassed someone and the other people who made the complaints are still being sought. This scandal deprived the actor of several projects on the horizon.

He was arrested in August, since then renowned brands broke their contract with him and he was banned from certain artistic activities in China. Until now, his legal status remains, in part, uncertain.
