After the birth of Archie, their first child, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry they decided they needed some stability in their lives. With that goal in mind, they bought a beautiful mansion located in Santa Barbara County, more specifically, in the state of California. However, the almost paradisiacal home that they built in recent years did not guarantee them the peace that they needed so much since there is a detail that made the house almost uninhabitable.

The insertion of the protagonist of Suits in the royal family it was anything but fluid. She, a rebellious and independent woman, never finished adapting to the rigidity of the Crown. For her part, the British never accepted her customs or -according to his own statements- his skin color. In the midst of the internal crisis that caused the birth of his first-born Archie Harrisson, the couple concluded that it was time to move away from the UK and chose to settle in the United States.
Both Meghan and Harry wanted to live in Santa Barbara and finally found their dream home. The 11 million dollar mansion is equipped with large gardens, a sauna, swimming pool, a huge bookstore and even wine with a movie included. There they settled in 2020 ready to build a beautiful family but, less than two years later, they found him at a huge disadvantage: a powerful smell that invades the neighborhood.

“It smells like waste that has been rotting in the sun. My stomach churns. I have seen many homeowners close their windows when the wind blows.” explained a resident of the area to the British media The Daily Mail. The source of the disgusting stench is the Andrée Clark Bird Refuge which is located very close to Montecito.a residential area where not only the royal couple lives but also celebrities such as Ellen Degeneres with his wife Portia de Rossi, Oprah Winfrey, Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry.

This is one of the largest wildlife refuges in the area with a extension of 16 hectares made up of swamps where the water stagnates and generates strong odors. According to Cameron Benson, clean water manager for the city of Santa Barbara: “Odor problems are sporadic but sometimes worse in some conditions.”
After receiving several complaints from neighbors, the authorities reported that this may last until the fall and that, by then, they will have already carried out a series of structural reforms to prevent it from happening again.
This isn’t the first time Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have faced an invasion of unwanted scents. Previously, the couple had to endure the strong odors that came from a legal cannabis factory located a few meters from their home. On that occasion, the same company modified the operation of the establishment after complaints from residents.
