Although the specific reasons that caused the loss of the famous couple are unknown, studies of this type of pregnancy shed light on the risks.

According to the ‘Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital’, exclusively dedicated to pediatric and obstetric care that is part of the Stanford University health system, in the United States, multiple pregnancy carries higher risks of complications.

Thus, the gestation of twins or twins can have drawbacks such as premature births. In fact, according to the medical center, more than 60% of all births of two babies or more are premature, that is, before 37 weeks, when their bodies and organs are not yet fully mature to function properly outside the mother’s womb. This condition also implies that they have low birth weight.

In addition, women with multiple pregnancies are two to five times more likely to develop gestational hypertension. “High blood pressure can increase the chances of placental abruption (placental abruption)”as indicated by the hospital of the renowned university in one of its publications, stating that another complication is that anemia is more common in this type of pregnancy than in those with a single baby.

In this sense, they are also part of the list of possible difficulties of a miscarriage in the last trimesters or a phenomenon called vanishing twin syndrome, in which more than one fetus is diagnosed, but one disappears (or is lost by spontaneous abortion), this usually occurs during the first trimester of pregnancy.

On the other hand, it is more common for these pregnancies to present abnormal amounts of amniotic fluid, especially in twins who share the placenta, as well as crossover of the umbilical cord and, as an additional risk for the mother, postpartum hemorrhage can occur due to the large placental surface and overdistended uterus.

Pregnant woman

Multiple pregnancy requires more medical controls in order to minimize risks and complications.

In the case of the risks posed by multiple gestation for twins or fraternal twins that are in the womb, they are, on the one hand, the feto-fetal transfusion syndrome, an alteration that consists of the disorder that develops in identical twins that share a placenta because by communicating their blood vessels, one of them may receive excess blood while the other suffers a significant deficiency. In the worst case, this syndrome can cause intrauterine fetal death.

Babies of multiple pregnancies are also more likely to have birth defects such as neural tube defects, heart and gastrointestinal abnormalities.

In this context, as it is a multiple pregnancy, there is not the same capacity to maintain the pregnancy until week 37, so a preterm delivery or spontaneous abortion of one of the fetuses may occur. Also Infections can occur that generate early dilation and therefore loss.

(Besides: Nearly half of all pregnancies in the world are unplanned, study finds)

Finally, preterm birth, before the 37th week of pregnancy, occurs in more than 50% of twin births, in 90% of triplet births, and in all quadruple pregnancies. Thus, one of the complications of multiple pregnancies is that the position of the placenta is not correct and it is located in the lower part of the uterus (placenta previa). Besides, premature birth itself can lead to complications in the fetus not having fully developed.
