During his professional career, which spanned almost six decades, he recorded the songs for the soundtracks of more than 2,000 Indian films., such as “Mahal”, “Parichay” or “Amar Prem”, which earned her numerous awards for the best female playback singer. This tour also served him to receive in 1999 the Padma Vibhushan award, one of the most important civil honors in India, and in 2001 the Bharat Ratna, the highest civil decoration in India, and which until then had only recognized another figure of celluloid, the emblematic Bengali filmmaker Satyajit Ray.

In 1974, the Guinness Book of Records ranked Mangeshkar as the most recorded artist in history, noting that she had recorded at least 25,000 songs in 20 different Indian languages ​​between 1948 and 1974.

Its popularity crossed borders, and France distinguished it in 2007 with the Legion of Honor, the country’s highest civil decoration, established by Emperor Napoleon I.

Following the news of her death, social media was flooded with thousands of messages of condolence highlighting the prolific career of the singer, including numerous Indian political leaders.

“I am distraught beyond words. Kind and loving Lata has left us. She leaves a void in our nation that cannot be filled,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted. The president pointed out that “next generations will remember her as a stalwart of Indian culture, whose melodious voice had an unparalleled ability to captivate people.”

The president of India, Ram Nath Kovind, also expressed his condolences on Twitter, who highlighted “his wide range of songs, which represent the essence and beauty of India” and affirmed that his achievements “will continue to be incomparable”.

The Indian government decreed a two-day national mourning, during which the national flags will fly at half-staff, and reported that Mangeshkar will receive a state funeral, the public network Doordarshan said on Twitter.
