The experiment of a Spanish TV program: they confronted several “haters” with their victims and the consequences were unexpected

Haters and attacked, face to face in the cycle El Hormiguero (@pablomotos)

“Whenever you want, you can read your tweet out loud”, invites a voiceover. “Juan del Val is a bad person,” reads a man sitting in a small room in front of a camera. It is not a casting nor are the lines of any speech. Neither is it an actor or a media character. The man who reads that statement is a human being like any other, anonymous, but with great power, someone who, hiding behind a false name or an avatar, decides to hurt another person on social media: a hater or, in Spanish, an internet stalker.

“Excuse me, can I come in?” asks the other side of the door. writer and journalist Juan del Val, but above all, the repository of all the fury of that user. “Shame on you,” is @lensian080’s response when she comes face to face with the man she dedicates nasty comments and posts to on a daily basis.

The social experiment was part of a segment prepared especially for the Spanish cycle of Antena 3, the anthill. The driver of him, the journalist Pablo Motos proposed “to see someone’s face that we never see”, before giving way to the segment that compiles each of the encounters between victims and perpetrators. “It has been very difficult to locate them, because at the moment of truth no one wanted to come, but we have found several brave people,” the driver announced.

It is that the haters are not based on arguments, data or polite corrections, but on personal evaluations, insults, disqualifications and even threats. But what happens if the person who was written “useless”, “horrible”, “I would kill him”, sits down in front of the person who said it? Under this premise, the program asked each hater to explain the reasons for his hatred towards those celebrities and to read aloud and develop some of the tweets that are dedicated to them on a daily basis. What none of them knew is that his victim would be listening behind a door, much less, that they would finally have to tell him looking him in the eye.

It could be that it happened to me many times”. The first meeting ended with a “forgive me”.

Another of her stalkers went further. “Does it even have to come out in the soup? This man, arrogant, is horrible and traumatizing!”, she read her tweet and proudly added: “That is what I put, and I would put it again”. Just then, the door opened and Del Val appeared. After the scream and the initial shock, the woman behind the Twitter recognized that in the end, he was not so ugly. “Tell me about the books that I liked,” the writer then asked, looking for an answer to the bad reviews that this woman blurts out from the keyboard every time the author releases a new book. “It’s that I only read one and I don’t even remember the plot or the title,” the user ended up acknowledging, showing that her opinion was totally unfounded.
