(CNN) — A week after Will Smith took the stage and slapped Chris Rock while presenting at the Academy Awards, questions remain about the incident and its aftermath.
These are just some of them:
Will Smith’s career
Smith, who went from family rapper to comedy star in “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air” to box office giant, has built his career on being likeable on and off screen.
That’s one of the reasons why many initially hailed it for being his wife’s “protector” when he punched Rock after the comedian/actor made a joke from the Oscars stage about Jada Pinkett Smith’s very short hair.
“Jada I love you, ‘GI Jane 2,’ I can’t wait to see it,” Rock said as he presented the award for best documentary.
Smith then stormed onto the stage, punched Rock, returned to his seat and yelled at the comedian, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f***ing mouth!”
It is unclear if Rock knew that Pinkett Smith suffers from alopeciawhich is hair loss that can be caused by an autoimmune response.
Smith should be riding high after his best actor win, which came moments after the slap, for his role in “King Richard.”
But that has been overshadowed by that night’s actions and could well make studios hesitant to work with the actor, or at least delay planned projects.
as you pointed out Scott Mendelson of Forbes“the Oscar incident shattered a carefully crafted image of 30 years of approachable, harmless, always-on movie star charisma.”
A lot seems to hang on what moves Smith makes in the future, as he publicly apologized to Rock and resigned from the Academy.
Rock still hasn’t said anything at all
Three days after the controversial incident, Rock moved on to another stage.
During a comedy show for his “Ego Death Tour” at Boston’s Wilbur Theater, he briefly addressed the slap.
“I don’t have a ton of sh*t to say about what happened, so if you came here to hear that, I had written a whole show before this weekend,” Rock said. “And I’m still processing what happened, so at some point I’m going to talk about that s***. It’s going to be serious. It’s going to be fun, but right now I’m going to tell some jokes,” he added.
Many are waiting to hear Rock’s thoughts not only on Smith’s hit, but also on whether he was aware of Pinkett Smith’s medical condition and the fallout from what has been considered one of the most shocking moments in Music Awards history. Academy.
Others in Rock’s life have been more vocal.
His younger brother, comedian Tony Rock, took to Twitter to answer a few questions, including how his older brother was doing.
stillrich, tweeted Tony Rockwho also addressed his brother when he was slapped in one of his own stand-up performances that was shared on social media.
Days after the Oscars, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that it had “initiated disciplinary proceedings” against Smith.
While the actor has already resigned from the Academy, its president David Rubin said in a statement Friday that the group “will move forward with our disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Smith for violations of the Academy’s Rules of Conduct, before our next meeting.” board meeting on April 18.
Those actions could include permanent expulsion and anything else deemed within the scope of the Academy’s bylaws and/or rules of conduct.
