Havana Book Fair will host 32 countries and Mexico is guest of honor

Havana, March 30 (EFE) .- Cuba will celebrate the thirtieth International Book Fair (FIL) in Havana —between April 20 and 30— with representatives from 32 countries and Mexico as “guest of honor” , after two years of suspension due to the covid-19 pandemic. In this edition of the most massive cultural event in the country, more than 4,000 titles, 4 million books on various subjects and 1,000 e-books (digital) will be sold, its organizers reported at a press conference on Wednesday. The Fair —which will have as its main venues the old military fortress San Carlos de la Cabaña and the historic center of the Cuban capital— will bring together 276 foreign guests including writers, editors, distributors and other specialists. The president of the Cuban Book Institute (ICL), Juan Rodríguez, pointed out that, as is tradition, the program “is going to travel throughout the country” after its premiere in Havana, and explained that in its development it will take into account the health protocols established for covid-19. He stressed that the event will have a broad artistic program and one of its objectives is to reach the communities. Likewise, he indicated that in this edition the tributes are reserved for Cuban intellectuals Alberto Prieto and Luis Álvarez, national prizewinners for Literature and Social and Humanistic Sciences. And in addition, colloquiums will be held to remember the 120th anniversary of the birth of the national poet Nicolás Guillén and the centenaries of the deceased poets Carilda Oliver Labra and Jesús Orta Ruiz, and the 140th anniversary of the first Cuban costumbrista novel “Cecilia Valdés”, by Cirilo Villaverde. MEXICO, THE GUEST COUNTRY Mexico will be for the second time since 1998 the country to which the Cuban FIL is dedicated. He will attend this event with a delegation that will include twenty writers, along with artists who will bring their music, theater performances, exhibitions, audiovisuals and traditional dances. The head of the ICL stressed that Mexico has taken “extraordinary” measures to have a presence at the Fair and recalled that the ship “Huasteco”, of the Secretary of the Navy of that country, transferred to Cuba last January a shipment of 26,000 books, many of which will be donated to Cuban institutions. He advanced that the Mexican Economic Culture Fund will hold a fair in the Cuban capital and will open a bookstore “where the Cuban reader will have access to works and authors that would otherwise be impossible” which will remain as a “symbol” of the friendship between both nations. In a video message, the general director of promotion and festivals of the Mexican Ministry of Culture, Pablo Rafael Lamadrid, said that after the parenthesis forced by the pandemic, his country is prepared to be at the FIL with the best of its culture with a series of activities, including the “Mucho Corazón” exhibition. For his part, the cultural attaché of the Mexican embassy in Cuba, Santiago Ruy Sánchez de Orellana, recalled that the Caribbean country was the guest of honor at the Cervantino International Festival in the city of Guanajuato.
